Mother Dairy Visit 27.10.2017

Report on the Industrial Visit to Mother Dairy Plant Patparganj on 27.10.2017

A group of 30 students and 3 faculty members from Department of Economics, PGDAV College (Eve.) visited the Mother Dairy Plant in Patparganj on October 10, 2017. The contingent reached the venue at around 9:30 am. The facility was a pleasant sight and was kept very neat and tidy. At the venue our guide Ms. Neha, took us inside only after clearing a series of careful checks. After a strict security procedure we entered the facility. We were treated to some flavoured milk by our hosts before the tour began.

Mother Dairy is one of the largest milk companies in Asia. It started its operation in 1974 under the Operation Flood Programme of National Dairy Development Board. Mother Dairy sources its requirements of liquid milk from dairy co-operative and producer institutions. Milk is received from thousands of farmers on a daily basis from different collection centres and is put to more than 15 stringent tests before it is accepted for processing.

Our guide at Mother Dairy explained to us the different processes through which the milk goes before its ready for distribution and consumption. The processes of Clarification, Standardization, Homogenization and Pasteurization were explained to all of us. We were also shown a video on the history of Mother Dairy and the different processes that are used to make pure milk available to us near our homes. We were also taken to a tour of the plant where we saw the machinery in action behind a glass wall. Some of the tests done to check the purity of the milk were also performed in front of us. After all the necessary processes are done, the milk is then distributed to all the Mother Dairy booths or different consumer outlets through a very well organized distribution chain. Milk is dispatched in hygienic and sterilized milk tankers of packed in food grade plastic to your nearest milk shops. At the end of the tour of the plant, the entire contingent was treated to some ice-cream. After getting refreshed, we returned to our College.
